CHAPTER 13

BEROAN

WITH TYRATH’S DYING breath, he promised that Nsi and all the humans, would burn.

I glanced toward Nsi, who was pale and staring at Tyrath’s body, unblinking and unmoving. She appeared to be in shock over what had happened. With a grunt, I forced myself to my feet and limped over to her. Despite the blood on my chest, I pulled her into my arms. I did not say or do anything else but hold her.

As minutes passed, I felt the slight tremor her body made, and with her light gasping breaths, I realized she must be crying. I gently stroked her hair and just continued holding her as she released all the emotions she had held inside for many years.

My mind flew back to the battle. When I had first left, I flew high into the cliffs and then into the caverns. I quickly sensed for my mother’s presence and contacted her through my thoughts. I warned her and told her to get everyone to safety. I went as slowly as I could, while filling the cavern with the silver liquid, trying to buy time. She promised that she would, using the back entrances. The phoenixes, birds, and pegasi had come then, and I had no more time to communicate with her. A few of my clan who were in the caverns quickly changed as I reached the back of the cavern. I had already emptied my jar, and though the liquid had quickly been spreading, a purple dragon came at me, claws and tail swinging viciously in my direction. I had little room to maneuver, but I snapped out at him. He dodged, and because he was a bit smaller than I, was able to move around more.

A phoenix came, flying toward the dragon’s head and lashed out with its talons. All around the phoenix, fire grew until it was a great dome that encircled the phoenix. The purple dragon breathed out lightning and I could feel the electric shock coursing through my body. I grunted, as more phoenixes gathered around the dragon. One went low, flying beneath his jaws, and he was distracted by others around him and did not have time to dodge the attack. The phoenix ripped his throat out. Blood spurted wildly, staining the walls behind the dragon and the floor below.

I moved toward them, but it was too late. As the phoenixes continued flying through the caverns, I reached the dragon’s side. He landed on the ground of the cavern, in human form. His body gasped, drowning in his own blood. Behind him, stood two small children, too young to even change forms.

He had been protecting them.

As I held Nsi, and stared past her shoulder at Tyrath’s lifeless form, the image of the man who had been protecting his children forced itself to the forefront of my thoughts. I swallowed deeply as my arms tightened around Nsi and I placed my head against her shoulder. It was not just I who comforted her anymore; but her comforting me as well.
